Shiny Objects

Happy Monday everyone!

I hope y’all had a great weekend. I spent a good chunk of the weekend spending time with Nick (as we usually do since we don’t get to see each other during the week) and the rest of the time with my family. I got a lot done on the home front, created content for Cocoa Butter Diaries, and still managed to squeeze in time for a massage and a bubble bath. Go me! But enough about me. Lets get into this outfit.

I bought this ASOS boyfriend blazer on Black Friday because I didn’t have a brown blazer let alone one in brown plaid. It comes with a matching belt (which isn’t bad) but as you all know I’m not usually a fan of the belts that come with the pieces I buy. But I don’t own a brown belt either so what to do?? I’ll admit it was hanging in my closet for a minute because I was trying to come up with the perfect outfit. Then finally I decided to just use the belt that came with the blazer and style an outfit that way. But wait. Plot twist!

A few weeks ago as I was scrolling through my Instagram feed, an ad popped up for B-Low the Belt. Remember them?? They’re the ones who made the double buckle western belt that every it girl was wearing a couple of years ago. With jeans, cinching the waist of countless sweater dresses and blazers – yeah, THAT belt. But I digress. I saw this rhinestone belt in the ad and I was immediately drawn to it. At first I was like, really?? We’re not buying this. You don’t wear things like this. You’re just drawn to it because it’s shiny. Plus it’s probably like $500 anyways. So I let it go. Then, I saw it again on Instagram a couple of days later on Who What Wear. I was like, let’s at least look at it. I thought, there’s no way this belt is COMPLETELY covered in rhinestones and that I could possibly afford it. But oh, yes, it was totally blinged out. And I was surprised at the price ($158) because I thought it would be more than that. But it was sold out. Google to the rescue! I found the belt at Free People and ordered it IMMEDIATELY. I don’t regret it one bit.

Sequins, glitter, rhinestones and jeweled embellishments, and metallics aren’t just for evening wear anymore. There’s a way to add high shine to your day time looks – and even to the office! In fall 2017, I bought a black mohair sweater from H&M that had black pailettes on the cuffs. It quickly became my favorite sweater and I loved the pailette detail. It was just the right amount of extra that I could wear it during the day without looking like I was doing the walk of shame from the night before.
Metallics and glitter are also back in a huge way – especially when it comes to shoes – and I’m here for it. A great pair of ankle boots or flats in gold or pewter is a chic way to take your work wear to the next level if you work in a more conservative environment that maybe frowns upon statement jewelry. And glitter sneakers are a fun way to add some sparkle and shine to jeans and a tee looks if your office is more casual.

And although my shiny belt does come off as kind of an impulse buy, it really isn’t. As someone who belts just about everything and wears lots of neutrals, I plan to wear this belt with jeans, with an LBD, with jumpsuits…oh the possibilities! I can’t wait to wear this belt again.
