Denim on Denim

One of my favorite style trends is denim on denim.  I love chambray shirts.  I have one in pretty much every wash that they come in.  They’re extremely versatile because they act as a neutral, just like when you wear jeans.  I like this one in particular because it’s on the heavier side (perfect for winter) and it’s more structured so you can dress it up or down.  Another way you can rock your chambray tops is with colored denim – white, cream, black, red, and burgundy/oxblood are some of my personal favorites – if the denim on denim look is too bold for your taste or you just want to get more looks out of your favorite top.  The key to pulling off the denim on denim look is to wear a shirt that is lighter in color than your jeans.  The style of jean doesn’t matter at all here.  Flares and boyfriend-cut jeans are my other favorite go-to styles when I want to wear my chambray tops but feel free to wear whatever style you like.  I’m wearing one of my favorite pairs of skinny jeans (you may remember these from my Sweater Weather post) that I’ve been neglecting lately due to my excessive wear of my over the knee boots during the past month.  I cuffed the hem to add a little polish to my look and to showcase the shoes.

This maxi coat was a closet staple that I never realized I needed until last winter.  I have lots of wool coats in various lengths but surprisingly I did not have a camel dress coat.  In my defense, I do wear black a lot to the office and when I dress more formally so I didn’t really see the need for one at the time.  I finally found this one last February but I only got to wear it once before cleaning it and storing it for winter due to the abnormally warm winter in California last year.  She will definitely get her use out here in NYC this winter.  It can be worn when you’re dressed up for the office or a night out or dressed down with a chunky knit turtleneck, a pair of straight leg jeans, and your favorite flats or ankle booties.

Accessorizing the Denim

I kept my accessories minimal with this look.  I opted for a delicate lariat necklace, a statement ring, and a bangle to add a little glam and sparkle to my outfit.  For my handbag, I chose this oversized clutch that is perfect for holding all of my daily essentials.  Finally, I threw on my favorite pair of leopard pumps for that “pop” to complete my look.  If heels and/or clutches aren’t really your cup of tea, I swapped out my clutch for my Givenchy Nightingale while I was out and about later in the day for convenience purposes (I do grocery shopping on Sundays so I need both hands).  Also, I slipped on my Chanel espadrilles to make running my errands easier and I still got compliments on my outfit all day long.

I kept my makeup for my all denim look simple and fresh.  I’m obsessed with Armani’s “Maestro” foundation because it’s a few drops for your entire face that you rub in with your fingertips and the coverage is minimal.  I didn’t need primer or powder to reduce shine throughout the day either – which is a really big deal for me!  I put on some mascara (Dior Extase is my favorite), a little blush, and my go-to shade of lipstick for a little color and I was out the door.  And, as always, my Celine sunnies are glued to my face whenever I’m outdoors.

Have a great week!

xoxo, CCB
