Trend Talk: Fall 2019

Happy Monday Cocoa Butter Crewe!

September is almost here..crazy right?! And not only is it almost fall (y’all know I live for sweater and boots weather) but the largest issue of each major fashion magazine comes out in September. Page after page of the best pieces that perfectly embody each major trend for the upcoming fall and winter months. September is also “Fashion Month” wherein the biggest fashion weeks take place. However, a fashion week that has slowly been gaining more notoriety over the years has already come and gone: Copenhagen Fashion Week. And although there aren’t a lot of well-known Danish brands, the street style is some of the best I’ve seen.

One of the things I’m honestly great at is trend forecasting. Without even realizing it, I find myself being ahead of the curve when it comes to certain trends. And that’s something I want to incorporate more of when it comes to Cocoa Butter Diaries. With that in mind, I decided to share with y’all 10 of the trends that I think will be huge in the fall/winter months.

Victorian-Style Boots

Victorian-inspired boots, with their modest heels and minimal details, will be a popular shoe trend come fall. It may not be as much as an “it” trend as say the sock boot from years past but she’ll hold her own. I personally love lace-up boots like these in patent leather as they’re a fun way to add a bit of shine and dress up more casual and laid-back looks…like this one!

Acid Wash Denim

As I stated in last weeks blog post, acid wash denim will be a huge trend in the fall. I love this look because it’s a great example of how to incorporate the trend into a simple look. I kinda did the most with my look but then again that’s me…just the right amount of extra!

Boiler Suits

Doesn’t matter what color or fabric, boiler suits will continue to be everywhere come fall. The trend originally took off in the spring and summer (especially in utilitarian colors) but come fall look for more earth tones, winter whites, and denim. And they’re a blank canvas so feel free to go crazy with the accessories!

Denim Midi Length Skirts

Denim midi length skirts are going to take over the world. As you may have noticed, denim trends are changing. Baggier silhouettes, paper bag hems, and flares are dominating the scene. And denim skirts are changing too. Mini skirts are getting pushed aside for longer lengths this season. So if you don’t have a midi length denim skirt, get you one! OR if you bought a chambray midi or maxi dress during the summer, you can layer the top portion or tuck it in to get more wears as a skirt in the chillier months.

Leather

Besides leather jackets and occasionally leather pants, we don’t really incorporate leather all that much into our ready-to-wear arsenal. But this season, leather dresses and skirts are going to change all of that. My personal favorite is the leather wrap skirt (I’m a skirt gal more so than dresses) as I find skirts to be more versatile.

Suiting

Suiting has been a major trend for a while now BUT for fall, it’s going to be more fun. In the past, it was more about neutral and pastel colors and menswear-inspired silhouettes. For this season, it’s all about short suits, bold colors, statement details such as paper bag hem trousers and cutouts, and oversized jackets. And don’t be afraid to wear your suiting pieces as separates too! Trousers (especially with tees) are another big trend and so are oversized blazers. So you kinda knock out three trends with one outfit. You’re welcome.

Monochrome

Monochromatic looks have been trending for quite some time. However, they’re usually neutral monochromatic looks. This season, be as bold as you like with your color choices! I’m personally excited to do a monochromatic hunter green look and pop it with a burgundy handbag and white boots in the coming months.

Animal Print

Animal print is one of those trends that’s not going away. Leopard and snakeskin had their time to shine in spring and summer but now it’s zebra print’s turn. But don’t get me wrong! Leopard isn’t going anywhere in my closet (it’s a wardrobe staple to me as I consider it to be a neutral) and snakeskin has won me over as a mainstay, especially when it comes to shoes.

Athleisure

This ain’t the basic athleisure look that you’re used to. Long gone are the days of wearing your Lulu leggings with an oversized hoodie and calling it a look. It’s all about track suits now, especially track pants. I’m personally not too keen on buying track suits because I know I won’t wear the jacket as much as I would the pants to get a decent cost per wear and I for sure won’t wear them together as that’s not really my thing. I also love this look because it’s monochromatic as well!

Statement Sleeves

Whether they be puffy, balloon, or bells, statement sleeves will be a major hit come fall. Prairie dresses (which were big in the summer) tended to have statement sleeves as well so don’t put them away just yet. Statement sleeve tops are also what all the girls will be wearing this season. I personally love prairie dresses as they’re a great way to incorporate another trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon: western boots!

What trends are YOU personally excited about for fall? Let’s discuss in the comments!

Great post Amber. I would love to read more posts about trend forecasting. I’m looking forward to leather! Give me all the leather! I do have one question, can fuller figured or curvy women wear puff sleeves? I really want to try, but I’m scared of looking bigger.

Of course you can! But if you’re really self-conscious about it, do straight leg or wide leg jeans with it to balance it out. That way, the “focal point” isn’t just the sleeves. Hope that helps!
